Building Bridges

10 August 2010

The Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences today welcomed the ALP's commitment, if re-elected, to $21 million funding for the Inspiring Australia science engagement strategy.

The Council's President, Professor Linda Rosenman, said the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator The Hon Kim Carr, had specifically included social sciences and humanities within the science engagement policy and referred to the importance of design and other creative arts disciplines in his announcement.

Professor Rosenman said it was important to ensure that Australian industry, the public sector and the broader community had access to and understanding of the new knowledge and skills emerging from research, including from the humanities, arts and social sciences.

"The Council has identified an urgent need to build the bridges between policy makers, industry and the academic and research institutions. We need these links if Australia is to realise the opportunities before it and develop its talent," she said. "A commitment to science engagement is very welcome."

The Council also welcomed the commitment to developing and implementing a research workforce strategy. "Australia faces a shortage of researchers because of growing demand for highly qualified professionals and has a longer term need to develop the research base which will underpin innovation and productivity growth," Professor Rosenman said.

The Coalition has not yet released its policies for science, innovation and research.
