Commitment to Australian researchers
7 September 2009
The Australian Government's new commitment to using the knowledge and skills of Australian researchers will be a significant tool in meeting the challenges before Australian policy makers. In this media release, the Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences member organisation, the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, supports the Prime Minister Rudd's call for building stronger bridges between the public service and Australian universities.
Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia
The Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA) welcomes the Prime Minister Rudd's call for building stronger bridges between the public service and Australian universities. In the John Paterson Oration at the Australian New Zealand School Of Government annual conference in Canberra yesterday, the Prime Minister named several Fellows of ASSA who contributed to the strength of the nation through public service and administration, including the pioneers H.C. Coombs, Roland Wilson, Douglas Copland, John Crawford, and their modern-day successors such as Alan Fells and Peter Shergold.
In his speech Prime Minister Rudd also identified five crucial tasks for the public service;
- Provide high-quality, forward-looking and creative policy advice;
- Deliver high-quality programs and services that put the citizen first;
- Maintain a culture of honesty, impartiality and fairness, with a focus on retaining public trust;
- Provide flexible, agile responses to changing realities and government priorities; and
- Be effective and efficient in all its operations.
Academics in social science fields - political science, economics, law, demography, statistics, anthropology, psychology, sociology and others - provide evidence-based knowledge and advice to public administrators that contributes to the achievement of these goals. The Academy of Social Sciences prides itself on its contribution to government, public policy and public institutions.
