22 June 2009

The Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences today congratulated the 15 world-leading scholars awarded Australian Laureate Fellowships worth around $2.7 million each.

The Council's Executive Director, Helen O'Neil, said three of the Fellowships were awarded to researchers with expertise based on humanities and social sciences disciplines. The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research Senator The Hon Kim Carr announced the Fellowships today.

"Congratulations to Richard Bryant, Lesley Head and George Williams who were recognised as world leading scholars with the capacity and commitment to develop and mentor teams of emerging talent in Australia," O'Neil said.

"CHASS also congratulates the Australian Government's emphasis in the Fellowship Awards on projects and teams based on multidisciplinary approaches to managing the challenges in sustainability, national security, industrial innovation and public health."

"The fellowships recognise the need to bring together national and international expertise across a number of priorities. From Aboriginal mental health, to the challenges maintaining democratic rights at a time of terrorism to managing environmental sustainability, the Fellows will be creating a new capacity for innovation and thoughtful problem solving," she said.
