CHASS - the next step
24 July 2008
The Council for Humanities Arts and Social Sciences will review its strategic objectives and focus, four years after its formation, the CHASS President Professor Stuart Cunningham announced today.
Professor Cunningham said it was timely to review the Council's focus after four years, particularly since it had achieved many of its initial goals, including the recognition of humanities, arts and social sciences as an important part of Australia's innovation system.
"The aim is to build on the established base and achievements to ensure Australia makes good use of its considerable resources in the HASS sector and invests in it for future growth. Consultation with members and other stakeholders will be a priority and vital for the success of the strategic refocus", Professor Cunningham said.
The decision to undertake this process emerged from an external review which the Board commissioned of CHASS's operations. The review canvassed and analysed external perceptions and experience of CHASS.
This review had some great news for CHASS: CHASS had successfully brought together groups and individuals across a wide area of the sector, and established a reputation as an expert advocate in some areas. However the Review also warned it needed to refocus, and redefine its role in a changing policy environment.
"The Board took the Review very seriously as a message that in a way, CHASS has moved very fast, but now needs to take stock of its achievements and set a refreshed agenda in the new policy environment."
