Toss Gascoigne steps down

24 July 2008

CHASS announced today that its inaugural Executive Director, Toss Gascoigne, is stepping down from his position.

He departs on Friday 25 July to start up a consultancy business.

Professor Cunningham thanked Mr Gascoigne for the excellent work he has undertaken for CHASS and its members.

"CHASS is a significant player on the national scene, and Mr Gascoigne's contribution has lifted the profile of our sector," he said.

"CHASS serves as a rallying point for people working in the humanities, arts and social sciences. It's had a big impact over a short time for a small body."

Professor Cunningham said Mr Gascoigne helped the sector find a new voice and a new influence in national discussions on policy issues.

"The growth of CHASS and the partnerships we have developed owe much to his energy and commitment. We wish him the very best for the next stage of his work," he said.

Virginia Walsh, formerly Executive Director of the Group of 8, has agreed to assist the CHASS Board in the transition period while a new Executive Director is found.

Mr Gascoigne joined CHASS as interim director in January 2004, and the organisation was formally constituted 6 months later. It has 128 Members, all groups representing people from research, education and practice in the humanities, arts and social sciences.

The sector impacts on policy and growth in a broad area ranging from education and welfare to the creative industries and business innovation.

Professor Cunningham said that CHASS had successfully worked through the stages of formation and consolidation, and the appointment of a new Executive Director will give the organisation a chance to position itself for the next stage.

"We've created a successful organisation," he said. "Now it's time to sharpen our priorities and focus our energies on areas where we can add the greatest value to our sector.

"In the near future, we will be inviting members to participate in refreshing the role of CHASS and re-engaging with its future directions."
