CHASS celebrates Three Ministers

29 November 2007

CHASS today (Thursday) welcomed the appointment of the new Labor Government's Ministerial team.

CHASS President Professor Stuart Cunningham said the Ministerial makeup was a strong indication that the Government was determined to make education a cornerstone of its first term in office.

"Three key Ministers with responsibility for much of our sector are in Cabinet," he said. "This means issues relating to our sector will be represented at the highest level.

"Our community will be celebrating tonight!"

Professor Cunningham said he was delighted that the portfolio of Education was given to the Deputy Prime Minister.

"Julia Gillard is one of the life forces of this Government," he said. "Handing responsibility for Education to such a senior figure makes it clear where education sits in the priorities of this Government."

Professor Cunningham said the new portfolio of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research will help Australia benefit from the work of people in the humanities, arts and social sciences.

"We are confident Senator Kim Carr will bring energy and commitment to this portfolio as new Minister, and we look forward to working with him," he said.

"Senator Carr has already signalled a new recognition of the importance of the humanities, arts and social sciences, in terms of the role they play in basic research and innovation. We look forward to contributing to his agenda."

The third cabinet-level appointment is Peter Garrett, with responsibility for the Arts (along with the Environment and Heritage).

Professor Cunningham said that the arts always responded to Ministers with a passion for their portfolio.

"Peter Garrett is passionate about the arts. He recognises their cultural value as well as part they play in generating new industries and high-end employment," he said.

Professor Cunningham also congratulated the new Leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Brendan Nelson and Julie Bishop.

He said their time as ministers responsible for education should prove helpful when CHASS puts forward policy initiatives.
