Australasian Council of Deans of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities - DASSH
DASSH (Deans of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities) is pleased to be sponsor of HASS on the Hill. We consider that it provides an opportunity for academics in the wide range of disciplines covered by our organization to meet, inform and hopefully influence politicians about the importance to Australia and societies in general of their work.
Academics in these disciplines teach and influence more students in the Australian higher education sector than any other group. Australia is recognized for its creativity among other nations and much of this comes from the humanities, arts and social sciences.
At a time when economic growth is seen to be a product of sciences and health sciences there needs to be timely reminder that the human input to well being and development is the key to success. DASSH considers that HASS on the Hill allows academics to share their research passions with the wider community, thereby providing a forum to look at the long term investment by government in the "enduring arts".
University of Technology, Sydney
The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) is a dynamic and progressive university with a global perspective that is linked to the life of the city and the knowledge requirements of industry and the professions.
UTS has strong industry links and places a strong emphasis on workplace experience. Many of our courses include the opportunity to gain this experience working in industry and through a distinctive focus on practice-oriented teaching, learning and research making the leap from student to professional that much more rapid and easier.
UTS is strongly committed to working with the professions, industry, government and the wider community. Our research is focused on advancing knowledge for its intelligent and enterprising application for the benefit of society. We have built a strong national and international research profile in a discrete number of niche areas, with an emphasis on collaborative research with industry, business and government.
We are proud to support 2007 HASS on the Hill because we believe that it is important that researchers have the opportunity to speak directly with those who make the decisions - the politicians. Because we value our networks, see community engagement as vital and work collaboratively whenever possible we support any opportunity where our staff can be meet researchers from other institutions and share ideas.

The National Library of Australia
The National Library of Australia has a mandate to collect, preserve and provide access to Australia's documentary resources. We actively support learning, creative and intellectual endeavour and the dissemination of knowledge, ideas and information. Our major goal is to enhance learning and knowledge creation by simplifying and integrating services so that researchers can easily find and get material form our collection or collections held elsewhere across the library and cultural sector.
The National Library works closely with the research sector to achieve its goals and we are active participants in many Australian Research Council and other university based projects. We strongly support the aims of the Council of Humanities and Social Sciences and HASS on the Hill 2007. It is vital that the research and information sectors work together to bring the importance of research in the humanities, arts and social sciences to the attention of Government.
The Australian Council of University Art and Design Schools - ACUADS
The Australian Council of University Art and Design Schools (ACUADS) is the peak discipline body of university visual arts, crafts and design. ACUADS was established in 1981 (initially as the National Conference of Heads of Arts and Design Schools - NCHADS) as an association of heads of departments, schools and colleges of art and design. The change of name in 1994 to ACUADS was intended to reflect the location of art and design schools in the National Unified System of Australian Universities. In 2003, membership was extended to include other major TAFE institutions offering degree courses.
ACUADS represents over thirty Australian university art and design faculties, schools and departments and other academic units offering university degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including bachelor, master, and doctorate in art, craft and design.
ACUADS plays an active role in shaping quality education for artists, crafts practitioners and designers. The organisation addresses issues affecting the sector, and is concerned with the status of the visual arts and design industries in the wider economic, social and cultural development of Australia.
ACUADS is a founding member of the Council of Humanities Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) and is a proud supporter and active participant in the HASS on the Hill 2007. This year is a critical time to get the message of HASS sector across, and to bring to the attention of our political representatives the strength and value of our work to the ongoing prosperity and well-being of the Australian community.
Queensland University of Technology - QUT
QUT is pleased to be associated with HASS on the Hill, an important forum for sharing and furthering current thinking between like-minded peers and government representatives.

The Faculty is also the lead agency in the Institute for Creative Industries and Innovation and host to Federation Fellow and Distinguished Professor John Hartley.
QUT welcomes you to HASS on the Hill.
Australian Research Council - ARC
The Australian Research Council (ARC) is a statutory authority within the Australian Government's Education, Science and Training portfolio. The ARC advises the Government on research matters and manages the National Competitive Grants Program, a significant component of Australia's investment in research and development.
The ARC's mission is to advance Australia's research excellence to be globally competitive and deliver benefits to the community.
In seeking to achieve its mission, the ARC supports the highest-quality fundamental and applied research and research training through national competition across all disciplines, with the exception of clinical medicine and dentistry. In addition, the ARC brokers partnerships between researchers and industry, government, community organisations and the international community.
The outcomes of ARC-funded research deliver cultural, economic, social and environmental benefits to all Australians.
The ARC is pleased to sponsor HASS on the Hill to facilitate an exchange of ideas between researchers in the humanities, arts and social sciences and Federal Members of Parliament.
The Australia Council for the Arts

National Tertiary Education Union
The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) has been a long term supporter of the Council of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, and in particular NTEU has been a strong support of HASS on the Hill.
This initiative has given many academics in the humanities, arts and social sciences disciplines enormous opportunities to share their work with parliamentarians and press upon parliamentarians the importance of their work. These opportunities give real access to the nation's decision-makers and helps build a greater understanding and rapport between the humanities and parliamentarians.
The Union continues to support this initiative and is keen to see its continued success.
Group of Eight
The Group of Eight is pleased to sponsor Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) on the Hill 2007.
Scholarship, research and teaching in the humanities, arts and social sciences are essential to Australia's social, economic and cultural well-being. However, the contribution individuals working in these disciplines make to the nation is sometimes not well understood. HASS on the Hill focuses attention on this contribution and provides HASS researchers with a valuable opportunity to engage with politicians and their advisers in Federal Parliament about their work. It provides participants with useful insights about the workings of our parliamentary and political processes.
The Group of Eight represents Australia's leading universities. Its members are the vice-chancellors of:
- The Australian National University
- Monash University
- The University of Adelaide
- The University of Melbourne
- The University of New South Wales
- The University of Queensland
- The University of Sydney
- The University of Western Australia
Australian Film, Television and Radio School - AFTRS
The Humanities and Social Sciences play a vital role in the development of any society. For an institution like the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, they provide a wellspring of inspiration, information and analysis to underpin creative processes in audio-visual media. And the school in its turn feeds H&SS through the creative success of its alumni. To support the extension of one is to support the extension of the other and that's why we are happy to sponsor this event.
Council of Australian Law Deans - CALD
The Council of Australian Law Deans (CALD) is the peak body of Australian law schools and thus representative of a discipline that is intimately connected with the humanities and social sciences. Indeed, the discipline of law straddles the humanities and the social sciences, with elements that range from the theoretical to the empirical, from the historical to the contemporary, and from the fundamental to the applied. Moreover, law, although a discipline in its own right, cannot be fully understood except in context, and that context includes all of the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences. It is especially important for politicians, many of whom are themselves lawyers, to understand what academic lawyers do, and in particular to understand how legal research and law teaching add significant value to Australian society. CALD is sponsoring this event as an opportunity to further that understanding.
National Health and Medical Research Council - NHMRC
Established in 1936, NHMRC is Australia's peak body for supporting health and medical research; for developing health advice for the Australian community, health professionals and government; and for providing advice on ethical behaviour in health care and in the conduct of health and medical research.
The NHMRC Act provides four statutory obligations:
- Raise the standard of individual and public health throughout Australia;
- Foster the development of consistent health standards between the various States and Territories;
- Foster medical research and training and public health research and training throughout Australia; and
- Foster consideration of ethical issues relating to health.
Each year the National Health and Medical Research Council allocate an amount of money to sponsor events and/or conferences. NHMRC have lent support to Hass on the Hill in recognition of the value of social, behavioural and cultural aspects of health research.
