2006 HASS on the Hill:   Expanding Horizons

28 - 29 March 2006

About the event

Expanding Horizons is for early career researchers and professionals. They may recently have taken up new positions with universities, in research or industry, or in galleries, libraries or museums.

Registrants will come from all disciplines - the humanities, arts and social sciences, science, technology, engineering and medicine - and many will have completed a research degree in the previous three or four years.

You will share an interest in cross-disciplinary collaborations.

The event aims to open new horizons for young researchers and professionals, and participants will discuss their work with MPs and with colleagues from other disciplines.

How can early career researchers and professionals talk to Parliamentarians and influence policy? And which new industries or problem areas in Australia would benefit from a cross-disciplinary approach?

The event features a Briefing Day at the National Library, dinner at the Ottoman Restaurant (one of Canberra's finest), breakfast with a Federal Government Minister, morning tea with the Opposition and lunch at the National Press Club where the speaker will be actress Sigrid Thornton.

Your experiences and ideas on cross-disciplinary work will feed into a research project on collaborations between the arts and the sciences. CHASS is running this project with funding from the Department of Education, Science and Training.

You'll hear a series of stimulating and important speakers, and have a chance to mix with colleagues across a wide range of disciplines and institutions.

Highlights include individual meetings with Members and Senators. All registrants will be paired with a colleague for an appointment with a Parliamentarian, and an opportunity to discuss the potential of their work.
