Creative Industries Research Centre

3 March 2010

An investment of $17 million over four years for a new Creative Industries Innovation Centre was announced in 2009 by the Innovation Minister, Senator Kim Carr and the Arts Minister, Peter Garrett stating, "the Creative Industries Innovation Centre will draw together a critical mass of arts practitioners, cultural entrepreneus and researchers, with access to the latest technology and business support programs." This $17 million initiative was part of the Rudd government's $200 million Enterprise Connect initiative.

Calling all creative professionals

In March 2010, the Creative Industries Innovation Centre (CIIC) launched a new website for creative professionals.

The website allows you to:

  • Access tools and services to grow your creative business
  • Find out how to take your business to the next level
  • Think differently. Creative thinking for real world solutions
  • Be inspired by Australia's creative entrepreneurs

What is creative innovation?

When we talk about 'creative innovation' we're interested in how those working in the creative industries - whether as designers, content producers, artists, filmmakers, architects, to name but a few relevant fields - are actually working to improve the way industries perform. At its simplest, 'creative innovation' is about promoting the application of creative thinking, technologies and processes across the innovation economy. It highlights the contribution of creative companies and individuals to the wider innovation economy as a whole.

The website was launched this month and seeks out examples of industry innovation that result from direct engagement with ideas, applications and services developed by companies working in the creative industries. The emphasis shifts from celebrating artistic innovation to a more industry-focused emphasis on emerging new markets for creative companies.

By promoting creative innovation, the CIIC will serve to enhance the profile of the creative industries across Australia's innovation economy, building stronger connections and networks between creative companies and promoting emerging market opportunities and developments.
