About Articles
"Articles" has articles on news and policy in the arts, humanities and social sciences.
Precis of the three most recent articles will be posted on the home page, with a brief description and a link.
As articles are supplanted by more recent news, they will be moved down the list and then shifted into an archive, where they will remain accessible.
We invite all CHASS Members and readers to suggest suitable articles. Your contributions and suggestions will be acknowledged.
ERA - Indicators consultation paper
10 September 2009
The Australian Research Council has released a consultation paper on the Excellence in Research Australia initiative. The paper lists the various indicators to be used in evaluating specific disciplines in 2010, including lists of the esteem factors which will be used in addition to the indicators, by the Expert evaluation committees.
CHASS urges member organisations in research areas to look at the paper. CHASS will post a summary of the paper on our website next week and will prepare responses for the ARC. If you have feedback please contact the Council and/or send us your own submission. There is only a short period for comment (closes September 25) for this important project and there is still some major discussions to have in the social sciences area.
The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Carr, says the ERA will be a transformative project for researchers, universities and their partners in industry and Government.
The ARC is currently running a trial for the humanities and creative arts. The 41 higher education institutions submitted a total of more than 47,000 research output, including around 7,000 original creative works.
This highlights the scale of the task for the ERA. As Senator Carr said there is clearly a vast amount of work being done, but the funding agencies and policy makers don't have a reliable way of knowing where it is happening, how good it is, or how it measures up against the world's best.
