Creative Industries Innovation Centre (CIIC) - Update
6 April 2009
The Council is delighted that CHASS member, the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) will host the Creative Industries Innovation Centre.
Recently the government announced a significant step in upgrading national innovative capacity. An investment of $17 million over four years for a new Creative Industries Innovation Centre will lead to more focus for entrepreneurs. In a joint media release the Innovation Minister, Senator Kim Carr and the Arts Minister, Peter Garrett stated, "the Creative Industries Innovation Centre will draw together a critical mass of arts practitioners, cultural entrepreneus and researchers, with access to the latest technology and business support programs." This $17 million initiative was part of the Rudd government's $200 million Enterprise Connect initiative and the government sought expressions of interest from Universities and other insitutions around Australia to host the Centre.
The Creative Industries Innovation Centre will:
- Support development of small and medium-sized Australian creative businesses;
- Support research and research collaboration;
- Provide learning opportunities and access to creative technologies;
- Build a resource base for business expertise and industry research.
The Council is delighted that CHASS member, the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) will host the Creative Industries Innovation Centre. The Centre, to be based at UTS's Sydney City Campus, will provide services through a national consortium of partners, business adviser networks and Enterprise Connect centres. A number of arts and higher education CHASS members are also involved as consortium partners.
UTS announced earlier this year that Professor Sue Rowley, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) will lead the project at UTS and the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) will appoint an advisory board to provide strategic direction, which will include representation from UTS. The next step, says UTS, "is working with DIISR to appoint an advisory board, complete legal and construction milestones, establish a framework for the centre, appoint staff and conduct information audits on existing programs."
